I set out to build a lightning fast, privacy friendly URL shortener with custom domains and rich analytics. The goal was to compete with the clunky platforms already out there, so I focused heavily on making the tech perfect.
Things went wrong because I fell straight into the classic developer trap of assuming that if I built a great product, users would naturally find it. I spent 500 hours optimizing database indexes, tweaking redirect speeds, and making sure the interface looked great, but I did absolutely zero marketing or outreach.
My biggest mistakes were coding in complete silence for months instead of building an audience and entering a highly crowded market without a real distribution plan. I treated product polish as a substitute for actual customer acquisition.
If I have any advice for other founders, it is to remember that if you spend all your time coding and no time marketing, you just have an expensive hobby. Distribution is not something you figure out after you launch. You need to ship fast, even if it looks ugly, and see if anyone actually cares before you burn hundreds of hours on code.
